Cleaning Quartz

Quartz is a natural siliceous (hard) stone that has many properties conducive for everyday use. With its ecological beauty and shine, it is becoming a popular alternative to granite for countertops. Because quartz is non-porous, liquids and food particles can't seep through, causing it to be somewhat stain resistant and require very little maintenance. Little maintenance, however, doesn't mean no maintenance, and you must be careful about the chemicals you use to clean your quartz countertops. Here are some easy steps to help you keep your counters both clean and beautiful.

Daily Cleaning

Normal, everyday cleaning is a breeze. Merely wipe the surface with a damp, soft cloth, then wipe dry. As with any countertop, the faster you clean up after any mess, the less likely it is to be difficult to remove, so be careful to clean up any spills quickly.

Deep Cleaning

When you accidentally leave a mess for a long period of time, or you just need to deeply clean your countertop, there are several options. Over-the-counter cleaners are good as long as they are mild, contain no bleach, and aren't abrasive. For stuck on food or gum, simply scrape with a putty knife then wipe the area with a damp cloth.

If you want a more natural cleanser, mix equal amounts of water and white vinegar in a container. Soak a supple cloth in the mixture and wipe on the countertop like you would any other cleaner.

With any cleaner you choose, make sure to give your countertop a good rinse with water to ensure no residue is left behind. Always dry with a clean, soft cloth to avoid streaks and smudges.

What to Avoid

Strong chemicals and polishing agents can actually dull and compromise the luster. You also want to avoid powdery, abrasive cleaners. Any product made for bathtubs or tile will scratch the surface and cloud the finishing's shine.

Prolonged exposure to heat can also cause imperfections, so never place hot pots and pans directly on the countertop. Always use a trivet or towel under to protect natural enamel of the stone.

Research

There are numerous companies that have manufactured products specifically for quartz countertops. Keep in mind that quartz isn't like granite or tile, and it only needs minimal upkeep to retain its organic look and appeal. If you remain conscious of the products you use, the splendor and gloss of your quartz countertop will last forever.
